Skin 101: How to look after your skin, this winter

GUEST BLOGGER: Julie Neubert

The wonderful, local mum, Julie Neubert of the Body Shop has put together a list of Skin 101’s for us to think about throughout the colder months and in preparation for your Boudoir Experience with us. What Julie doesn’t know about self care & skin nourishment (as well as the best smelling Body Shop goodies!) is not worth knowing! Want to know more? Have a read below! (Oh, and all images included in this blog were not by taken by ourselves… But you probably already knew that!)

Your boudoir photo session is booked. You want to look and feel your very best on the day so you may have started thinking about which outfit you will wear, but have you started preparing your skin to be smooth and glowing for your photos? Don’t panic, I am here to help you prepare to bare. With some top tips on body care and facial skincare to leave you radiant and flawless.

“Lets start with the body & we will move onto the
face a little later…”

As soon as your boudoir session is in your diary its time to step up the exfoliating – the perfect time to start if its not part of your current regime.

  • Exfoliating is in my opinion the most important step in any regime, yet it is one of the most skipped steps.

    • Regular exfoliating rids skin of dry dead skin cells. It allows your other products to penetrate the skin deeper and maximises their benefits. Skin feels instantly smoother, softer and looks more healthy and brighter – perfect for boudoir legs and arms!
I love a good sugar body scrub, the fine sugar crystals are super gentle even for sensitive skins and effectively buff away dead skin cells leaving skin silky smooth,

    • The Body Shop has a great range my favourite is the Shea Body Scrub packed with Community Fair Trade Shea Butter from Ghana. Shea butter has been used for generations by Ghanian women to protect their skin from dry Saharian winds, shea is intensely nourishing.

    • I recommend exfoliating 2-3 times per week. Simply massage your scrub onto damp skin, in circular motions. Concentrate on drier areas such as elbows and knees and then rinse away.

      Easy.

Now you’ve buffed away all that rough dry skin its time to moisturise, there are so many choices on the market from light lotions to richer creams and butters. Its all about your skins needs and your texture preferences.

TEAM BUTTER

For a drier skin a body butter is super hydrating. The Body Shop were the first company to launch a Body Butter and our founder Anita Roddick came up with the idea when buttering toast in her kitchen! She wanted to create a product with a lovely buttery texture that melts into the skin just like butter melts into toast.

TEAM YOGURT

If you would like something quick and easy opt for The Body Shop Body Yogurt, super light weight, instantly absorbed and can even be applied on damp skin straight from the shower. There are 6 fragrances to choose from plus 3 limited edition seasonal scents.

Apply moisturiser daily both in the morning and evening, you will really start to see the benefits after just a few applications.

Don’t forget your feet!

The skin on your feet is much thicker than any other part of your body so needs targeted products to really get to work. The Body Shop Peppermint Reviving Pumice Foot Scrub is amazing, contains Pumice from volcanic rock with super exfoliating power and Peppermint Essential Oil to cool and refresh. Follow with Peppermint Cooling Foot Lotion to moisturise.

So that’s your body and feet sorted, now onto your facial skincare. This is a little more complex as everyone has very different needs. I am happy to offer personalised skincare consultations to target your personal skincare concerns.

“Just like the body, there are key steps you can take to prepare your face & skin for your photo shoot which will give your skin a healthy glow, smooth your skin and provide a really good base for make up application.”

First step exfoliating, yes here I go again! But it really will make a difference.

For the face The Body Shop Liquid Peels  are incredible, they work by lifting, trapping and removing, dirt, impurities and dead skin cells from your skin leaving your skin looking and feeling so clean and fresh. The Vitamin C  Glow-Revealing Liquid Peel is packed with radiance boosting vitamin C from Camu Camu berries.

A unique gel texture, massage onto dry skin in circular motions for about 10-15 seconds, you will see and feel the little clumps of dirt and dead skin being lifted from your face. Its kind of gross but at the same time amazing seeing real results! Rinse away any excess peel and you are ready for your next step. After exfoliation is a great time to pop on a face mask, though I wouldn’t recommend a deep cleansing mask the day before your photo shoot, in the weeks before it will really prep your skin. The Body Shop have a lovely range of Expert masks to target your concerns, whether it be purifying, energising, hydrating, pollution clearing, soothing or refining. You can even mix and match on different areas of your face.

Using a good moisturiser can make a massive difference to the appearance of your skin and also a smooth flawless finish for your photo shoot.

I am a massive fan of The Body Shop Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Cream. Its like a spa in a jar! The Oils of life range is based around 3 precious seed oils, Black Cumin, Rosehip and Camellia designed to feed your skin with new life and radiance and it really works!

My top tips?

  • Don’t forget moisturise day and night, day time to protect, night time to repair. Skip one and you are going round in circles.

  • The eyes are one of the first places to show signs of ageing and fatigue, pop on a tiny drop of The Body Shop Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Eye Cream Gel. A pot filled with light weight eye treatment that helps with fine lines, puffiness and dark circles, also contains light reflecting gold particles to instantly awaken the eye area.

  • My final product to share with you, I nickname Cinderella in a bottle! The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Reviver Instant Smoother. This product immediately smooths the skin leaving it super silky, gives your skin an instant energised glow and makes THE perfect base for make up.

Finally the day of your Boudoir photo shoot, your skin is buffed, moisturised and glowing with radiance. All that’s left is to go enjoy and have lots of fun xxx
